COVID – how we protect our guests:  Switzerland’s Tourism service providers are taking special measures to protect their guests. So do we. Thanks to our safety measures, we now hold the accreditation of “Clean & Safe”. This is based on rules for hygiene and methods, as well as public health and employee protection guidelines issued by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).  The aim of “Clean & Save” is to protect our guests to the highest degree possible against infection with Covid. “Clean & Safe” is supported by Switzerland Tourism.

Discover... more than just Gimmelwald!

During the summer Gimmelwald is an ideal location to commence stunning hiking tours in the region. In winter, Mürren and the Schilhorn offer you a magnificent ski area catering for all levels of skiers. If skiing is not your thing, there are opportunities for winter hikes and tobogganing.
The Schilthorn, famous as the location for the James Bond movie ‘On her Majesty’s Secret Service’ is accessible year round and offers a breathtaking panorama of the region. The audio-guided tour of the village, which starts at the station, is also highly recommended.

Arriving by car

Highway Bern, Thun, Interlaken, then direction Wilderswil, Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg. There is a spacious car park next to the Schilthorn cablecar station in Stechelberg (parking fee apply). Luggage trolleys are available free of charge.

Arriving by public transport

Take the train to Interlaken Ost. Change train to Lauterbrunnen. From Lauterbrunnen, take the bus to Stechelberg cable car station. Usually, the public transport connections and timetables are very reliable in Switzerland.

Schiltorn cable car

The Schilthorn cable car usually runs from 05.55am every half an hour until 07.55pm.
Afterwards, hourly until 11.45pm. Friday and Saturday nights there is an additional service at 12.55am. Gimmelwald is the first stop – the ride takes about 5 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

In 1968 Eva’s Dad built this little gem in the Bernese Oberland. For many years we have rented the upper apartment. Over the years our guests had questions, many of them were the same. You might find the answer to your query in the FAQ on the right hand side.
If not, please feel free to contact us at gimmelwald@thomis.ch – we are more than happy to give you further information.

Sorry, but this is not at all possible. Gimmelwald is one of the last villages in Switzerland, which is car free. Only cars with a special permission (this includes commercial use) are allowed.  You can park your car in Stechelberg right in front of the Schilthorn cable car.

Take the ticket at the barrier as you drive into the car park.
Go to the pay machine (located near the cashier’s window).
Before you put your ticket into the pay machine, choose the button ‘Vorauszahlungsticket’ (pre-payment ticket) and choose the period 7, 14 or 30 days.
Pay the required amount, ie CHF 42.00, CHF 68.00 or CHF 84.00. (price information not guaranteed)
Your ticket will then allow you to come and go from the car park without having to pay again, within the time period you selected.
Use your ticket on exit and re-entry. Don’t forget to wait for the machine to return your ticket.
Non pre-payment tickets are available at a higher cost and do not allow you to leave and re-enter the car park.

Generally speaking, you can of course bring your four-legged friend with you. Just remember you are liable for any damages your dog causes, ie scratched furniture and any other damage directly caused by the dog.

Gimmelwald is a small village mit 98 residents. The golden days with two small grocery shops are over  – unfortunately. Dairy and meat products however can still be purchased directely from the farmers.  In Muerren (5 minutes away by the Schilthorn cableway) there is a COOP grocery store, where you can find all what you need – in good and fresh quality. For the real “big shopping” we recommend a trip to Wilderswil or Interlaken.

Please be aware of the opening hours of the shops in Switzerland during the weekends: on Saturday until 05.00 pm and usually closed on Sundays. We therefore recommend you to buy the necessary food for the weekend at the latest in Wilderswil.

Yes, there is the Alpine Sports Centre in Muerren, which offers a variety of sports, ie tennis, squash, gym, a swimming pool, sauna and in winter curling.
A heated outdoor swimming pool is available in Lauterbrunnen, in summer only.

We live 3 hours drive away from Gimmelwald. Currently we do not have a caretaker in Gimmelwald who can take care of the handovers. This is why we usually do the handovers ourselves. We actually enjoy this and it allows us to have a personal chat with our guests – something we truly appreciate.

Central heating, district heating with pellets
